چکیده

This paper revisits the old question of whether wage growth di¤ers by education level. Do more educated workers invest more than less educated workers in …rm speci…c, sector speci…c or general human capital? Do they gain more from improved job match? The paper makes both a methodological and a substantive contribution by o¤ering an alternative strategy for separately identifying returns to general experience, sector speci…c experience, …rm tenure, and job match. Our empirical results, based on the Survey of Income and Program Participation, show that overall wage growth is higher for more–educated workers. This re‡ects higher returns to general experience for college graduates and higher returns to sector experience for high school graduates. Improvements in job match grow monotonically with education. Returns to Tenure and Experience Revisited--Do Less Educated Workers Gain Less from Work Experience?

This paper explores whether within job and between job wage growth is lower for less-educated workers. While a simple model of heterogeneous learning ability predicts that individuals with low learning ability will have flatter wage profiles, this prediction has been largely ignored in the recent welfare reform debates. The key econometric problem in estimating returns to tenure and experience ...

Gender Wage Gaps Reconsidered: A Structural Approach Using Matched Employer-Employee Data

In this paper I propose and estimate an equilibrium search model using matched employer-employee data to study the extent to which wage di¤erentials between men and women can be explained by differences in productivity, disparities in friction patterns or wage discrimination. The availability of matched employer-employee data is essential to empirically disentangle di¤erences in workers product...

In this paper I provide evidence that initial occupational assignments a¤ect the ability revelation of young workers in the labor market.
